English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Ibn Abi 'Adiyy, from Sulayman, from Abi 'Uthman — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Let not the adhan of Bilal deter any of you from his pre-dawn meal [suhur]. For he calls — or he said: gives the adhan — so that those praying at night may return [to rest] and those sleeping may wake. [The true Fajr] is not when [the light] appears like this' — and Ibn Abi 'Adiyy Abu 'Amr gathered his fingers and pointed them downward — 'but when it appears like this' — and he spread apart his two index fingers [indicating the spreading of the true dawn on the horizon] — meaning Fajr.
