English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Hajjaj, from Isra'il ibn Yunus, from al-Walid ibn Hisham, the freed slave of al-Hamdani, from Zayd ibn Za'ida — that 'Abdullah said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his companions: Let no one convey to me anything about any of my companions, for I love to come out to you with a pure heart. Then wealth came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he divided it. I passed by two men, one of whom was saying to the other: By Allah, Muhammad did not intend by his division the face of Allah nor the Hereafter. I stood and listened to what they said. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, you said to us: Let no one convey to me anything about any of my companions — and I passed by so-and-so and so-and-so and they were saying such-and-such. The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned red and it grieved him. Then he said: Leave me out of this. Moses was harmed more than that, yet he was patient.'
