English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) — via Yahya, from Sufyan — Sulayman narrated to us from 'Umara, from Wahb ibn Rabi'a — from 'Abdullah — that he said: 'I was hiding behind the curtains of the Ka'ba when three people came — a Thaqafi man and two Qurashi in-laws of his — fat-bellied, with little understanding in their hearts. They conversed among themselves. One of them said: Do you think Allah (عز وجل) hears what we say? Another said: He hears what we say loudly; what we say quietly He does not hear. Another said: If He hears any of it, He hears all of it.' He mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the verse was revealed: 'And you were not concealing yourselves [lest your hearing testify against you]...' to His words: '...so they were not among those who were allowed to appease [al-mu'tabin]' [41:22-24]. — [The narrator] said: And Mansur narrated to me from Mujahid, from Abu Ma'mar, from 'Abdullah — similarly.
