English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) — via Waki', from al-A'mash, from Ibrahim, from 'Alqama — that he said: 'I was walking with the Prophet ﷺ through a cultivated area [harth] in Medina when he passed by some Jews. Some of them said to others: Ask him about the spirit. Others said: Do not ask him. They said: O Muhammad, what is the spirit? He stood — leaning on a palm frond [usib] — and I was behind him. I thought that revelation was coming to him. He then said: 'They ask you about the spirit. Say: The spirit is from the command of my Lord, and you have been given of knowledge only a little' [17:85]. Some of them then said: We told you not to ask him.''
