حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ حَدَّثَنَا مَنْصُورٌ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ عَنْ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي غَارٍ فَأُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ و
َالْمُرْسَلَاتِ عُرْفًا فَجَعَلْنَا نَتَلَقَّاهَا مِنْهُ فَخَرَجَتْ حَيَّةٌ مِنْ جَانِبِ الْغَارِ فَقَالَ اقْتُلُوهَا فَتَبَادَرْنَاهَا فَسَبَقَتْنَا فَقَالَ إِنَّهَا وُقِيَتْ شَرَّكُمْ كَمَا وُقِيتُمْ شَرَّهَا

English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Hajjaj, from Sufyan, from Mansur, from Ibrahim, from 'Alqama — that Ibn Mas'ud said: 'We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a cave when [the surah] 'By those sent forth in waves' [al-Mursalat, 77] was revealed to him. We were receiving it from him when a snake came out from the side of the cave. He said: Kill it! We rushed toward it but it outran us. He said: It was spared your evil just as you were spared its evil.'
