حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ أَنَّ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ لَقِيَهُ عُثْمَانُ بِعَرَفَاتٍ فَخَلَا بِهِ فَحَدَّثَهُ ثُمَّ إِنَّ عُثْمَانَ قَالَ لِاب
ْنِ مَسْعُودٍ هَلْ لَكَ فِي فَتَاةٍ أُزَوِّجُكَهَا فَدَعَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ عَلْقَمَةَ فَحَدَّثَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَنْ اسْتَطَاعَ مِنْكُمْ الْبَاءَةَ فَلْيَتَزَوَّجْ فَإِنَّهُ أَغَضُّ لِلْبَصَرِ وَأَحْصَنُ لِلْفَرْجِ وَمَنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَلْيَصُمْ فَإِنَّ الصَّوْمَ وِجَاؤُهُ أَوْ وِجَاءَةٌ لَهُ

English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) — via Muhammad ibn Ja'far, from Shu'ba, from Sulayman, from Ibrahim, from 'Alqama — that 'Uthman met Ibn Mas'ud at 'Arafat and took him aside and spoke privately with him. Then 'Uthman said to Ibn Mas'ud: 'Would you like a young woman — I will marry you to her?' 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud then called 'Alqama over and narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever among you is able to marry [al-ba'a], let him marry — for it lowers the gaze more and guards the private parts better. And whoever is unable, let him fast — for fasting is a restraint [wija'] for him — or: it is a restraint for him.'
