English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) — via Muhammad ibn 'Ubayd, from al-A'mash, from 'Umara, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid — that he said: 'Al-Ash'ath ibn Qays entered upon 'Abdullah while he was eating lunch and said: "O Abu Muhammad, come and have lunch." He said: "Is today not the day of 'Ashura'?" He said: "And what is that?" He said: "It is merely a day on which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast before Ramadan. When the month of Ramadan was prescribed, it [the fast of 'Ashura'] was abandoned."'
