Hadith #285

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زَيْدٍ عَنْ أَبِي رَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَيْلَةَ الْجِنِّ خَطَّ حَوْلَهُ فَكَانَ يَجِيءُ أَحَدُهُمْ مِثْلُ سَوَادِ النَّخْلِ وَقَالَ لِي
لَا تَبْرَحْ مَكَانَكَ فَأَقْرَأَهُمْ كِتَابَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فَلَمَّا رَأَى الزُّطَّ قَالَ كَأَنَّهُمْ هَؤُلَاءِ وَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَعَكَ مَاءٌ قُلْتُ لَا قَالَ أَمَعَكَ نَبِيذٌ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَتَوَضَّأَ بِهِ

English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Abu Sa'id, from Hammad ibn Salama, from 'Ali ibn Zayd, from Abu Rafi' — that on the night of the jinn [encounter], the Messenger of Allah ﷺ drew a circle around him [Ibn Mas'ud]. They [the jinn] would come — each one like the dark silhouette of a palm tree — and [the Prophet ﷺ] said to me: 'Do not leave your place.' He then recited to them the Book of Allah (عز وجل). When he saw the Zutt [a certain people], he said: 'They are like these.' the Prophet ﷺ then said: 'Do you have any water?' I said: 'No.' He said: 'Do you have any nabidh?' I said: 'Yes.' He then performed ablution with it.
