English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) — via 'Abd al-Rahman, from Za'ida, from 'Asim, from Shaqiq — that 'Abdullah said: 'We used to speak to one another during the prayer, and one of us would greet another, and one would convey a request to another. Then I came to the Prophet ﷺ and greeted him while he was praying, but he did not respond to me. That seized me with alarm. When he finished his prayer, he said: Indeed Allah (عز وجل) introduces from His command what He wills, and He has now introduced [the ruling] that you shall not speak during the prayer.'
