English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via Muhammad ibn Ja'far, from Shu'ba, from al-Aswad ibn Qays, from Sa'id ibn 'Amr ibn Sa'id — from the Prophet ﷺ — that he said: 'We are an illiterate nation — we do not write or calculate. The month is like this and like this and like this' — and he bent his thumb on the third [showing twenty-nine] — 'and the month is like this and like this and like this' — meaning the completion of thirty [days].'
