English Translation
Yahya narrated to us, from 'Isa ibn Hafs, my father narrated to me who said: I was with Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) on a journey. He prayed Dhuhr and 'Asr two rak'ahs each [shortening]. Then he went to a rug and saw people praying voluntary prayers. He said: 'If I were to pray voluntary prayers, I would have completed the obligatory ones [to four rak'ahs]. O nephew, I accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on journeys, and he never prayed more than two rak'ahs until Allah took him. And I accompanied Abu Bakr, and he never prayed more than two until Allah took him. And 'Umar and 'Uthman likewise.'
