English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via Muhammad ibn Ja'far, from Shu'ba, from Thabit — that he said: 'I asked Ibn 'Umar about nabidh made in clay jars [al-jarr] — did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbid it? He said: "That is what they claim." I said: "the Prophet ﷺ forbade it?" He said: "That is what they claim." I said: "You yourself heard it from him?" He said: "That is what they claim — may Allah spare me [from asserting what I did not hear]."' [The narrator said:] If someone said to him 'Did you hear it yourself?' he would become angry and be on the verge of quarreling with them.
