English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via Muhammad, from Shu'ba, from Jabala ibn Suhaym — that he said: 'Ibn al-Zubayr used to give us dates as rations — and the people at that time had been struck by hardship. We were eating when Ibn 'Umar passed by us and said: "Do not eat two dates at a time [al-qiran] — for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade al-iqran, unless a man asks permission of his brother."' Shu'ba said: 'I do not believe the permission clause is part of the hadith — rather it appears to be from Ibn 'Umar's own words.'
