English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via Muhammad ibn Bakr, from Yahya ibn Qays al-Ma'ribi, from Thumama ibn Sharahil — that he said: 'I went out to Ibn 'Umar and we asked: "What is the prayer of a traveler?" He said: "Two rak'as, two rak'as — except Maghrib, which is three." I said: "What if we are at Dhu al-Majaz?" He said: "What is Dhu al-Majaz?" I said: "A place where we gather, trade, and remain for twenty nights or fifteen nights." He said: "O man — I was in Azerbaijan — I do not know whether he said four months or two months — and I saw them praying two rak'as, two rak'as. And I saw the Prophet ﷺ of Allah (ﷺ) right before my eyes praying them two rak'as, two rak'as. Then he cited this verse: 'There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah ﷺ an excellent example' [33:21] — until he finished the verse."'
