Hadith #554

English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via 'Affan, from Hammad ibn Salama, from 'Ali ibn Zayd, from Yahya ibn Ya'mar — that he said: 'I said to Ibn 'Umar: "Among us are men who claim that [all] matter is in their hands — if they wish, they act; if they wish, they do not act." He said: "Tell them that I am free of them and they are free of me." Then he said: "Jibril (عليه السلام) came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'O Muhammad, what is Islam?' He said: 'That you worship Allah, associate nothing with Him, establish the prayer, pay zakat, fast Ramadan, and perform Hajj.' He said: 'If I do that, am I Muslim?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'You have spoken truthfully.' He said: 'And what is ihsan?' He said: 'That you fear Allah (تعالى) as though you see Him — for if you do not see Him, He sees you.' He said: 'If I do that, am I a muhsin?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'You have spoken truthfully.' He said: 'And what is iman?' He said: 'That you believe in Allah, His angels, His scriptures, His messengers, resurrection after death, Paradise, Hellfire, and divine decree in its entirety.' He said: 'If I do that, am I a believer?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'You have spoken truthfully.'"' — [Second chain via 'Affan, from Hammad ibn Salama, from Ishaq ibn Suwayd, from Yahya ibn Ya'mar, from Ibn 'Umar, from the Prophet ﷺ — the same. And Jibril (عليه السلام) used to come to the Prophet ﷺ in the form of Dihya.]
