English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via 'Abdullah ibn Muhammad, from Abu Usama, from 'Umar ibn Hamza, from Salim — that Hatib ibn Abi Balta'a was brought before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said to him: 'Did you write this letter?' He said: 'Yes. But by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, the faith in my heart has not changed. However, every man of Quraysh had kinsmen and household who protected his family [in Mecca] — so I wrote a letter hoping Allah would thereby protect my family.' 'Umar said: 'Grant me permission to deal with him.' He said: 'Would you kill him?' He said: 'Yes, if you give me permission.' He said: 'And what do you know — perhaps Allah has looked upon the people of Badr and said: "Do as you wish."'
