حَدَّثَنَا عَتَّابٌ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو حَمْزَةَ يَعْنِي السُّكَّرِيَّ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى عَنْ صَدَقَةَ الْمَكِّيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ اعْتَكَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ
وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَاتُّخِذَ لَهُ فِيهِ بَيْتٌ مِنْ سَعَفٍ قَالَ فَأَخْرَجَ رَأْسَهُ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّ الْمُصَلِّيَ يُنَاجِي رَبَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فَلْيَنْظُرْ أَحَدُكُمْ بِمَا يُنَاجِي رَبَّهُ وَلَا يَجْهَرْ بَعْضُكُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ بِالْقِرَاءَةِ

English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via 'Attab, from Abu Hamza (meaning al-Sakkari), from Ibn Abi Layla, from Sadaqa al-Makki — that he said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed i'tikaf in the last ten nights of Ramadan, and a small tent of palm fronds was set up for him. One day he stuck his head out and said: "The one who prays is in private conversation with his Lord (عز وجل) — so let each of you consider what he is privately saying to his Lord. And do not raise your voices over one another in recitation."'
