َنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَحْنُ أُمَّةٌ أُمِّيُّونَ لَا نَحْسُبُ وَلَا نَكْتُبُ الشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَقَبَضَ إِبْهَامَهُ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ

English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via Hashim, from Ishaq ibn Sa'id, from his father — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'We are an unlettered nation — we do not calculate nor write. The month is like this, and like this, and like this' — and he closed his thumb on the third [time, indicating twenty-nine days].
