English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via Yunus, from Hammad ibn Zayd, from Ayyub, from Nafi' — that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab acquired land from the Jews of Banu Haritha called Thamgh. He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have acquired valuable wealth and I want to give it in charity.' So he made it a sadaqa [charitable endowment]: it could not be sold, given as a gift, or inherited. Those of sound judgment from 'Umar's family would administer it. Whatever surplus came from its produce would go for the sake of Allah (تعالى), for the wayfarer, for the freeing of slaves, for the poor, for relatives, and for the weak. Whoever administered it would not be at fault for eating from it in a reasonable manner or feeding a friend without accumulating wealth from it. Hammad said: 'Amr ibn Dinar claimed that 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar used to give gifts to 'Abdullah ibn Safwan from it.' And Hafsa donated her land on the same terms, and Ibn 'Umar donated his land on the same terms, and Hafsa administered it.
