Ibn Numayr narrated to us, 'Ubaydullah informed us, from Nafi', who said: Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) informed me that the people of Jahiliyyah used to fast on the day of 'Ashura, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fasted it and ordered its fasting. When Ramadan was made obligatory, he said: 'Whoever wishes, let him fast it, and whoever wishes, let him leave it.'
