حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ وَابْنُ بَكْرٍ الْمَعْنَى قَالَا أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ أَخْبَرَنِي نَافِعٌ أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ كَانَ يَقُولُ كَانَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ حِينَ قَدِمُوا الْمَدِينَةَ يَجْتَمِعُونَ فَيَتَحَيَّنُونَ الصَّلَاةَ وَلَيْسَ يُنَادِي بِهَا أَحَدٌ فَتَكَلَّمُوا يَوْمًا فِي ذَلِكَ
فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ اتَّخِذُوا نَاقُوسًا مِثْلَ نَاقُوسِ النَّصَارَى وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ بَلْ قَرْنًا مِثْلَ قَرْنِ الْيَهُودِ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ أَوَلَا تَبْعَثُونَ رَجُلًا يُنَادِي بِالصَّلَاةِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَا بِلَالُ قُمْ فَنَادِ بِالصَّلَاةِ

English Translation
Abd al-Razzaq and Ibn Bakr narrated to us, with the same meaning, they said: Ibn Jurayj informed us, Nafi' informed me that Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) used to say: 'When the Muslims first came to Madinah, they would gather and estimate the time for prayer, and no one would call for it. One day they discussed that, and some said: "Use a bell like the Christians." Others said: "Use a horn like the Jews." 'Umar said: "Why not send a man to call to prayer?" the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O Bilal, get up and call to prayer."'
