حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ وَهُوَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ الْحَفَرِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ مِنْ الشَّجَرِ شَجَرَةً لَا يَسْقُطُ وَرَقُهَا وَإِنَّهَا مَثَلُ الرَّجُلِ الْمُسْلِمِ قَالَ فَوَقَعَ الن
َّاسُ فِي شَجَرِ الْبَوَادِي وَكُنْتُ مِنْ أَحْدَثِ النَّاسِ وَوَقَعَ فِي صَدْرِي أَنَّهَا النَّخْلَةُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ هِيَ النَّخْلَةُ قَالَ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِأَبِي فَقَالَ لَأَنْ تَكُونَ قُلْتَهُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ كَذَا وَكَذَا

English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via 'Umar ibn Sa'd (Abu Dawud al-Hafri), from Sufyan, from 'Abdullah ibn Dinar — that he said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Among trees there is a tree whose leaves do not fall — it is the likeness of the Muslim man." People began thinking of desert trees. I was among the youngest of those present, and it occurred to me that it was the date palm. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "It is the date palm." I mentioned this to my father [later], and he said: "That you had said it aloud would have been more pleasing to me than such and such."'
