English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via al-Husayn ibn Muhammad and Surayj, from Ibn Abi al-Zinad, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith, from 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb, from his father, from his grandfather — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came upon two men who were tied together walking toward the Sacred House [Ka'bah]. He said: 'What is this being tied together?' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we vowed to walk to the Ka'bah tied together.' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'This is not a [valid] vow' — and he cut their tie. Surayj added in his narration: 'A vow is only what is sought by it the face of Allah (عز وجل).'
