حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ وَمِسْعَرٌ عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْعَبَّاسِ الْمَكِّيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَ
لَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَفْضَلُ الصَّوْمِ صَوْمُ أَخِي دَاوُدَ كَانَ يَصُومُ يَوْمًا وَيُفْطِرُ يَوْمًا وَلَا يَفِرُّ إِذَا لَاقَى قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا صَامَ مَنْ صَامَ الْأَبَدَ

English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via Waki', from Sufyan and Mis'ar, from Habib ibn Abi Thabit, from Abu al-'Abbas al-Makki — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The best fast is the fast of my brother Dawud (عليه السلام) — he fasted one day and broke fast one day, and he never fled when he faced the enemy.' And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'He has not [truly] fasted who fasts perpetually without ever breaking fast.'
