English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via Muhammad ibn Ja'far, from Shu'ba, from 'Amr ibn Murra, from 'Abdullah ibn al-Harith, from Abu Kathir — from the Prophet ﷺ: 'Beware of oppression — for oppression is darknesses on the Day of Resurrection. Beware of obscenity — for Allah does not love obscenity or deliberate obscenity. And beware of miserliness — for it destroyed those before you: it commanded them to sever ties and they severed, it commanded them to be miserly and they were, it commanded them to act wickedly and they acted wickedly.' A man rose and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, which Islam is best?' He said: 'That the Muslims be safe from your tongue and your hand.' He [or another man] said: 'O Messenger of Allah, which hijra is best?' He said: 'That you abandon what Allah dislikes. And hijra is of two types: the hijra of the town-dweller [hadir] and the desert-dweller [badawi]. As for the desert-dweller — he obeys when commanded and responds when called. As for the town-dweller — it is the greater of the two in trial and the greater in reward.'
