Hadith #312

English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via Isma'il, from Dawud ibn Abi Hind, from 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb, from his father, from his grandfather — that some people were sitting at the door of the Prophet ﷺ. Some of them were saying: 'Did Allah not say such-and-such?' And others were saying: 'Did Allah not say such-and-such?' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard that and came out — his face flushed as though pomegranate seeds had burst upon it — and said: 'Is this what you have been commanded? Or is this what you were sent for — to pit parts of the Book of Allah against one another? Indeed the nations before you went astray through such things as this. Look to what you have been commanded and act upon it, and what you have been forbidden — refrain from it.' [Also narrated via Yunus, from Hammad ibn Salama, from Humayd, Matar al-Warraq, and Dawud ibn Abi Hind — from 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb, from his father, from his grandfather — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out upon his Companions while they were disputing about al-qadar, one pulling a verse and another pulling a verse... — and he mentioned the hadith.]
