Hadith #339

English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via 'Abd al-Razzaq, from Ma'mar, from Matar, from 'Abdullah ibn Burayda — that 'Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad doubted [the existence of] the Hawd [the Prophet ﷺic pool]. Abu Sabra — a companion of 'Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad — said to him: 'When your father traveled as a delegate to Mu'awiya, I traveled with him. I encountered 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr and he narrated to me face-to-face a hadith he had heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — he dictated it to me and I wrote it down.' He said: 'I adjure you — make this horse run until it sweats and bring me that document.' He mounted the horse and rode it until it sweated, then brought him the document. In it was: "'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As narrated to me that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Indeed Allah hates obscenity and deliberate obscenity. By the One in Whose hand is Muhammad's soul — the Hour will not come until the trustworthy are accused of treachery and the treacherous are trusted, until obscenity and deliberate obscenity become widespread, ties of kinship are severed, and neighborly relations are corrupted. By the One in Whose hand is Muhammad's soul — the likeness of the believer is indeed like a piece of gold: its owner blows on it and it neither changes nor diminishes. By the One in Whose hand is Muhammad's soul — the likeness of the believer is indeed like a bee: it eats what is good and produces what is good, and when it lands it neither breaks nor spoils. Behold — I have a pool [Hawd] whose two sides are as far apart as between Ayla and Mecca — or he said: Sana'a and Medina. In it are pitchers like the stars. It is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey. Whoever drinks from it will never thirst thereafter.'"' Abu Sabra said: 'Then 'Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad took the document, and I grieved over it. Yahya ibn Ya'mar met me and I complained to him about that. He said: "By Allah, I have memorized it better than I memorize a surah from the Quran." And he narrated it to me exactly as it had been in the document — word for word.'
