English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via Isma'il ibn Ibrahim ibn 'Ulayya, from Abu Hayyan, from Abu Zur'a ibn 'Amr ibn Jarir — who said: 'Three Muslim men sat with Marwan in Medina and heard him narrating about the Signs [of the Hour] — that the first of them would be the emergence of the Dajjal. The men then went to 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr and told him what they had heard from Marwan about the Signs. 'Abdullah said: "Marwan has said nothing [of consequence]. I have retained from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concerning this a hadith I have not forgotten since. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'The first of the Signs to appear will be the rising of the sun from the west and the emergence of the Beast [al-Dabba] at mid-morning [duha]. Whichever of the two precedes the other, the other will follow close behind it.'" Then 'Abdullah said — and he used to read the scriptures — "I think the first to appear will be the rising of the sun from the west. For every time it sets, it comes beneath the Throne and prostrates and seeks permission to return — and it is granted permission — until the day Allah wills that it rise from the west. It does as it has always done: comes beneath the Throne, prostrates, and seeks permission to return — but no answer is given. Then it seeks permission again and receives no answer. Then it seeks permission again and receives no answer. Until, when the night has passed as long as Allah wills, and it realizes that if it were given permission it could no longer reach the east in time, it says: 'My Lord — how far away is the east! Who will take care of the people?' — until when the horizon looks like a ring, it seeks permission to return — and it is told: 'From where you are, rise!' And it rises upon the people from the west." Then 'Abdullah recited this verse: {The day some of the Signs of your Lord come, no soul will benefit from its faith if it had not believed before, or had not earned some good through its faith} [Al-An'am: 158].'
