English Translation

It was narrated from Abu Hurayra (رضي الله عنه) — via Hushaym, from al-'Awwam ibn Hawshab, from 'Abdullah ibn al-Sa'ib — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Each obligatory prayer to the next prayer is an expiation for what is between them. And Friday to Friday, and the month to the month [Ramadan to Ramadan], are expiations for what is between them.' Then he later said: 'Except for three things.' He [Abu Hurayra] said: I understood that something new had occurred [i.e., an addition to the hadith]: 'Except for: shirk with Allah, breaking the pledge [nakthu al-safqa], and abandoning the Sunnah.' He [the Prophet ﷺ] said: 'As for breaking the pledge — it is to give allegiance to a man and then turn against him and fight him with your sword. As for abandoning the Sunnah — it is defecting from the Jama'a [the Muslim community].'
