Hadith #209
Arabic Text
وَبِإِسْنَادِهِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ قَالَ لَأَتَصَدَّقَنَّ اللَّيْلَةَ بِمَالِي فَخَرَجَ بِهِ فَوَضَعَهُ فِي يَدِ زَانِيَةٍ فَأَصْبَحَ النَّاسُ يَتَحَدَّثُونَ تُصُدِّقَ عَلَى فُلَانَةَ الزَّانِيَةِ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ بِمَالٍ فَقَالَ أَيْضًا فَوَضَعَهُ فِي يَدِ سَارِقٍ فَأَصْبَحَ أَهْلُ الْمَدِينَةِ يَتَحَدَّثُونَ تُصُدِّقَ عَلَى فُلَانٍ السَّارِقِ وَخَرَجَ بِمَالٍ أَيْضًا فَوَضَعَهُ فِي يَدِ رَجُلٍ غَنِيٍّ
قَالَ لَوْ شِئْتُ لَقُلْتُ لَا يَدْرِي حَيْثُ وَضَعَهُ وَرَجَعَ الرَّجُلُ إِلَى نَفْسِهِ فَأُرِيَ فِي الْمَنَامِ أَنَّ صَدَقَتَكَ قَدْ قُبِلَتْ أَمَّا الزَّانِيَةُ فَلَعَلَّهَا تَعِفُّ عَنْ زِنَاهَا وَأَمَّا السَّارِقُ فَلَعَلَّهُ أَنْ يُغْنِيَهُ عَنْ السَّرِقَةِ وَأَمَّا الْغَنِيُّ فَلَعَلَّهُ يَعْتَبِرُ فِي مَالِهِ

English Translation
And with the same chain, from Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'A man from the Children of Israel said: Tonight I shall give charity. He went out with his charity and placed it in the hand of a thief. In the morning, the people said: Charity was given to a thief last night! He said: O Allah, to You is all praise. I shall give charity again tonight. He went out and placed it in the hand of an adulteress. In the morning, they said: Charity was given to an adulteress! He said: O Allah, to You is all praise, even upon an adulteress. I shall give charity again tonight. He went out and placed it in the hand of a wealthy man. In the morning, they said: Charity was given to a wealthy man! He said: O Allah, to You is all praise. He was told: As for your charity to the thief, perhaps it will deter him from stealing. As for the adulteress, perhaps it will deter her. As for the wealthy man, perhaps he will take a lesson and spend from what Allah has given him.'
