Hadith #272
Arabic Text
وَبِالْإِسْنَادِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لَيْسَ الْمِسْكِينُ الَّذِي تَرُدُّهُ الْأُكْلَةُ وَالْأُكْلَتَانِ وَاللُّقْمَةُ وَاللُّقْمَتَانِ أَوْ التَّمْرَةُ وَالتَّمْرَتَانِ شُعْبَةُ شَكَّ فِي اللُّقْمَةِ وَالتَّمْرَةِ وَلَكِنَّ الْمِسْكِينَ الَّذِي لَيْسَ لَهُ غِنًى يُغْنِيهِ وَلَا يَسْأَلُ النَّاسَ إِلْحَافًا أَوْ يَسْتَحِي أَنْ يَسْأَلَ النَّاسَ إِلْحَافًا
English Translation
With the same chain of narration, he said: "The truly needy person is not the one who is turned away by a morsel or two, or a bite or two — or a date or two (Shu'bah was uncertain about 'bite' and 'date') — but the truly needy person is the one who has no wealth to suffice him and does not ask people persistently, or is too shy to ask people persistently."
