English Translation

Isma'il narrated to us, Rawh ibn al-Qasim narrated to us, from al-'Ala' ibn 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Ya'qub, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه), who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Do you know what backbiting (ghibah) is?' They said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said: 'It is mentioning your brother in a way he dislikes.' It was said: 'What if what I say about my brother is true?' He said: 'If what you say about him is true, then you have backbitten him, and if it is not true, then you have slandered him.'
