Chain of Narration (Isnad)

حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بِشْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْمُتَوَكِّلِ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ أَنَّ نَاسًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانُوا فِي سَفَرٍ فَمَرُّوا بِحَيٍّ مِنْ أَحْيَاءِ الْعَرَبِ فَاسْتَضَافُوهُمْ فَأَبَوْا أَنْ يُضَيِّفُوهُمْ فَعَرَضَ لِإِنْسَانٍ مِنْهُمْ فِي عَقْلِهِ أَوْ لُدِغَ قَالَ فَقَالُوا لِأَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ هَلْ فِيكُمْ مِنْ رَاقٍ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنْهُمْ نَعَمْ فَأَتَى صَاحِبَهُمْ ف

َرَقَاهُ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ فَبَرَأَ فَأُعْطِيَ قَطِيعًا مِنْ غَنَمٍ فَأَبَى أَنْ يَقْبَلَ حَتَّى أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ مَا رَقَيْتُهُ إِلَّا بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ قَالَ فَضَحِكَ وَقَالَ مَا يُدْرِيكَ أَنَّهَا رُقْيَةٌ قَالَ ثُمَّ قَالَ خُذُوا وَاضْرِبُوا لِي بِسَهْمٍ مَعَكُمْ

English Translation

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (رضي الله عنه) narrated that some of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came upon an Arab tribe and they did not host them. The chief of that tribe was stung by a scorpion. They did everything they could, but nothing helped. Some of them said: 'Go to those people who stopped here, perhaps one of them has something.' So they came to them and said: 'Our chief has been stung, and we tried everything but nothing helped. Do any of you have something?' One of them said: 'Yes, by Allah, I will perform ruqyah [spiritual healing]. But we asked you for hospitality and you refused. I will not perform ruqyah until you give us a payment.' They agreed on a flock of sheep. He went and recited al-Fatiha over him, and the man recovered. When they brought the sheep, the Companions said: 'Let us not divide it until we ask the Prophet ﷺ.' They asked him, and he laughed and said: 'How did you know it is a ruqyah? Divide it and assign me a share.'
