Hadith #180

حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ أَخْبَرَنَا هِشَامٌ عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَخِيهِ مَعْبَدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ هَلْ سَمِعْتَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْعَزْلِ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ نَعَمْ سَأَلْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ الْعَزْلِ فَقَالَ وَمَا هُوَ قُلْن
َا الرَّجُلُ تَكُونُ لَهُ الْمَرْأَةُ الْمُرْضِعُ فَيُصِيبُ مِنْهَا وَيَكْرَهُ أَنْ تَحْمِلَ فَيَعْزِلُ عَنْهَا وَتَكُونُ لَهُ الْجَارِيَةُ لَيْسَ لَهُ مَالٌ غَيْرَهَا فَيُصِيبُ مِنْهَا وَيَكْرَهُ أَنْ تَحْمِلَ فَيَعْزِلُ عَنْهَا فَقَالَ لَا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ لَا تَفْعَلُوا فَإِنَّمَا هُوَ الْقَدَرُ

العزل فقال وما هو قلن
English Translation
Yazid narrated to us, Hisham informed us, from Muhammad, from his brother Ma'bad ibn Sirin who said: I said to Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (رضي الله عنه): 'Did you hear from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ anything about al-Haruriyyah [the Khawarij]?' He said: 'I do not know what al-Haruriyyah is, but I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: There will emerge from among this ummah — he did not say: from this ummah — a people whose prayer you would regard as insignificant compared to your prayer. They recite the Quran but it does not go beyond their throats — or: their collarbones. They pass through the religion as an arrow passes through game. The archer looks at his arrow, its shaft, its notch, and its feathering — and he doubts about the arrowhead — whether there is any trace on it or not.'
