حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا سُوَيْدُ بْنُ نَجِيحٍ عَنْ يَزِيدَ الْفَقِيرِ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ إِنَّ مِنَّا رِجَالًا هُمْ أَقْرَؤُن
َا لِلْقُرْآنِ وَأَكْثَرُنَا صَلَاةً وَأَوْصَلُنَا لِلرَّحِمِ وَأَكْثَرُنَا صَوْمًا خَرَجُوا عَلَيْنَا بِأَسْيَافِهِمْ فَقَالَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ يَخْرُجُ قَوْمٌ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ حَنَاجِرَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنْ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنْ الرَّمِيَّةِ

English Translation
Muhammad ibn 'Ubayd narrated to us, Suwayd ibn Najih narrated to us, from Yazid al-Faqir who said: I said to Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (رضي الله عنه): There are men among us who are the best of us in reciting the Quran, the most frequent in prayer, the most in maintaining ties of kinship, and the most in fasting, yet they see that the sword is the truth. He said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'There will emerge a people who recite the Quran but it does not go beyond their throats. They will pass through the religion as an arrow passes through game. They will kill the people of Islam and leave the idol worshippers. If I were to reach them, I would kill them as the people of 'Ad were killed.'
