English Translation

Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Atash narrated to us, Ja'far — meaning ibn Sulayman — narrated to us, from 'Ali ibn 'Ali al-Yashkuri, from Abu al-Mutawakkil al-Naji, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (رضي الله عنه) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform i'tikaf in the middle ten days of Ramadan. One year he performed i'tikaf, and when the twenty-first night came — which was the night after the morning of which he would leave his i'tikaf — he said: 'Whoever was doing i'tikaf with me, let him do i'tikaf in the last ten days. I was shown this night, then made to forget it. I saw myself prostrating in water and mud on its morning. So seek it in the last ten days, and seek it in every odd night.' Then it rained that night, and the mosque leaked at the place where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed. I looked at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the morning of the twenty-first, and his face was covered with mud and water.
