English Translation
Wahb ibn Jarir narrated to us: Hisham ibn Hassan narrated to us from Muhammad — meaning Ibn Sirin — from Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) that Hilal ibn Umayyah accused his wife of adultery with Sharik ibn Sahma'. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The legal punishment (hadd), or else he must produce proof on your back.' He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, when one of us sees a man upon his wife, should he go seek witnesses?' the Prophet ﷺ kept saying: 'The hadd, the hadd.' So Hilal said: 'By the One Who sent you with the truth, I am truthful, and Allah will reveal what will save my back from the hadd.' Then Jibril (عليه السلام) descended, and Allah revealed: 'And those who accuse their wives...' [24:6] until the verse of li'an was completed.
