حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ وَحَجَّاجٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي شُعْبَةُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ قَتَادَةَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ لَمَّا أَرَادَ رَسُولُ الل
َّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يَكْتُبَ إِلَى الرُّومِ قَالُوا إِنَّهُمْ لَا يَقْرَءُونَ كِتَابًا إِلَّا مَخْتُومًا قَالَ فَاتَّخَذَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ فِضَّةٍ كَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى بَيَاضِهِ فِي يَدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَقْشُهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ

English Translation
Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us — and Hajjaj said: Shu'bah narrated to me — he said: I heard Qatadah narrating from Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) who said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanted to write to the Romans, it was said to him: 'They do not read a letter unless it has a seal.' So he had a silver ring made, with the engraving 'Muhammad Rasul Allah' (Muhammad, Messenger of Allah). It is as if I can still see its whiteness on his hand.
