Hadith #308

English Translation

Anas (رضي الله عنه) said: I was sitting by the pulpit on Friday while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delivering the sermon, when some of the people of Madinah said: "O Messenger of Allah, the drought has become severe, the trees have withered, and the livestock have perished. Pray to Allah to send us rain." He said: "O Allah, send us rain. O Allah, send us rain." By Allah, we could not see a cloud in the sky nor a trace of one, and there was no building or house between us and [Mount] Sal'. Then a cloud like a shield appeared from behind it, and when it reached the middle of the sky it spread and then rained. By Allah, we did not see the sun for six days. The following Friday, a man entered through that gate while the Prophet ﷺ was delivering the sermon and said: "O Messenger of Allah, livestock have perished and roads are cut off. Pray to Allah to withhold it." He (ﷺ) raised his hands and said: "O Allah, around us and not upon us. O Allah, upon the hills, mountains, valleys, and places where trees grow." The rain stopped and we walked out in the sunshine.
