English Translation

'Ali ibn 'Asim narrated to us, from Humayd, from Anas (رضي الله عنه) — and he mentioned a man from al-Hasan — who said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ consulted the people regarding the prisoners on the Day of Badr and said: Allah (عز وجل) has given you power over them. 'Umar ibn al-Khattab stood and said: O Messenger of Allah, strike their necks. the Prophet ﷺ turned away from him. Then the Prophet ﷺ returned and said: O people, Allah has given you power over them, and they were only your brothers yesterday. 'Umar stood again and said: O Messenger of Allah, strike their necks. the Prophet ﷺ turned away from him. Then Abu Bakr stood and said: O Messenger of Allah, we think you should pardon them and accept ransom from them. The heaviness left the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he pardoned them and accepted ransom. Allah (عز وجل) then revealed: "Were it not for a prior decree from Allah, a tremendous punishment would have touched you for what you took."'
