حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ أَنَسٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَرَكَ قَتْلَى بَدْرٍ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ حَتَّى جَيَّفُوا ثُمَّ أَتَاهُمْ فَقَامَ عَلَيْهِمْ فَقَالَ يَا أُمَيَّةُ بْنَ خَلَفٍ يَا أَبَا جَهْلِ بْنَ هِشَامٍ يَا عُتْبَةُ بْنَ رَبِيعَةَ يَا شَيْبَةُ بْنَ رَبِيعَةَ هَلْ وَجَدْتُمْ مَا وَعَد
َكُمْ رَبُّكُمْ حَقًّا فَإِنِّي قَدْ وَجَدْتُ مَا وَعَدَنِي رَبِّي حَقًّا قَالَ فَسَمِعَ عُمَرُ صَوْتَهُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَتُنَادِيهِمْ بَعْدَ ثَلَاثٍ وَهَلْ يَسْمَعُونَ يَقُولُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ { إِنَّكَ لَا تُسْمِعُ الْمَوْتَى } فَقَالَ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ مَا أَنْتُمْ بِأَسْمَعَ مِنْهُمْ وَلَكِنَّهُمْ لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ أَنْ يُجِيبُوا

English Translation
Affan narrated to us, Hammad narrated to us, from Thabit, from Anas (رضي الله عنه), that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ left the slain of Badr for three days until they began to decompose. Then he came to them, stood over them, and said: 'O Umayyah ibn Khalaf, O Abu Jahl ibn Hisham, O Utbah ibn Rabi'ah, O Shaybah ibn Rabi'ah — have you found what your Lord promised to be true? For I have found what my Lord promised me to be true.' Umar said: 'O Messenger of Allah, how can you speak to bodies that have no souls?' He said: 'You do not hear better than them, except that they cannot respond.'
