حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ وَحَجَّاجٌ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ مُحَارِبِ بْنِ دِثَارٍ سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ قَالَ أَقْبَلَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ الْأَنْصَارِ وَمَعَهُ نَاضِحَانِ لَهُ وَقَدْ جَنَحَتْ الشَّمْسُ وَمُعَاذٌ يُصَلِّي الْمَغْرِبَ فَدَخَلَ مَعَهُ الصَّلَاةَ فَاسْتَفْتَحَ مُعَاذٌ الْبَقَرَةَ أَوْ النِّسَاءَ مُحَارِبٌ الَّذِي يَشُكُّ فَلَمَّا رَأَى ا
لرَّجُلُ ذَلِكَ صَلَّى ثُمَّ خَرَجَ قَالَ فَبَلَغَهُ أَنَّ مُعَاذًا نَالَ مِنْهُ قَالَ حَجَّاجٌ يَنَالُ مِنْهُ قَالَ فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ أَفَتَّانٌ أَنْتَ يَا مُعَاذُ أَفَتَّانٌ أَنْتَ يَا مُعَاذُ أَوْ فَاتِنٌ فَاتِنٌ فَاتِنٌ وَقَالَ حَجَّاجٌ أَفَاتِنٌ أَفَاتِنٌ أَفَاتِنٌ فَلَوْلَا قَرَأْتَ سَبِّحْ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى وَالشَّمْسِ وَضُحَاهَا فَصَلَّى وَرَاءَكَ الْكَبِيرُ وَذُو الْحَاجَةِ وَالضَّعِيفُ أَحْسِبُ مُحَارِبًا الَّذِي يَشُكُّ فِي الضَّعِيفِ

English Translation
Muhammad ibn Ja'far and Hajjaj both (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that shu'bah narrated to us, from Muharib ibn Dithar, who said: I heard Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari (رضي الله عنهما) say: A man from the Ansar came with two camels used for irrigation, and the sun had begun to set. He found Mu'adh [ibn Jabal] leading the Maghrib prayer and reciting Surah al-Baqarah. So the man left the prayer and prayed on his own. Mu'adh was told about this and said: 'He is a hypocrite.' The man went to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him. the Prophet ﷺ said to Mu'adh: 'Are you one who causes trial, O Mu'adh? Recite such and such surahs instead.'
