English Translation

'Abd al-Samad and Mu'awiyah ibn 'Amr narrated to us, both said: Za'idah narrated to us, 'Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn 'Aqil narrated to us, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما), who said: "the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه): 'At what time do you pray Witr?' He said: 'At the beginning of the night, after 'Isha'.' He said: 'And you, O 'Umar?' He said: 'At the end of the night.' the Prophet ﷺ said: 'As for you, O Abu Bakr, you have taken the cautious approach. And as for you, O 'Umar, you have taken the resolute approach.'" Meaning: Abu Bakr prayed early out of caution against missing it, and 'Umar delayed seeking the virtue of the last third of the night.
