حَدَّثَنَا حَسَنٌ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ سَمِعَ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ إِنَّ أَزْوَاجَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَأَلْنَهُ النَّفَقَةَ فَلَمْ يُوَافِقْ عِنْدَهُ شَيْءٌ حَتَّى أَحْجَزْنَهُ فَأَتَاهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يُؤْذَنْ لَهُ ثُمَّ أَتَاهُ عُمَرُ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ
يُؤْذَنْ لَهُ ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَا بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ فَأُذِنَ لَهُمَا وَوَجَدَاهُ بَيْنَهُنَّ فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ ابْنَةَ زَيْدٍ سَأَلَتْنِي النَّفَقَةَ فَوَجَأْتُهَا أَوْ نَحْوَ ذَلِكَ وَأَرَادَ بِذَلِكَ أَنْ يُضْحِكَهُ فَضَحِكَ حَتَّى بَدَتْ نَوَاجِذُهُ وَقَالَ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ مَا حَبَسَنِي غَيْرُ ذَلِكَ فَقَامَا إِلَى ابْنَتَيْهِمَا فَأَخَذَا بِأَيْدِيهِمَا فَقَالَا أَتَسْأَلَانِ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا لَيْسَ عِنْدَهُ فَنَهَاهُمَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْهُمَا فَقَالَا لَا نَعُدْ فَعِنْدَ ذَلِكَ نَزَلَ التَّخْيِيرُ

English Translation
Hasan narrated to us, Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to us, Abu al-Zubayr narrated to us — he heard Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) say: The wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him for household expenses, but he had nothing at hand, until they pressed him. Then Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) came seeking permission, and then Umar came, and the Prophet ﷺ was surrounded by his wives. When they heard the voices of Abu Bakr and Umar, they dispersed quickly. the Prophet ﷺ smiled and said: 'These women were around me asking for expenses, and when they heard your voices, they hurried behind the screen.' Abu Bakr said: 'O Messenger of Allah, they deserve to be admonished.' Then Abu Bakr took hold of Aishah's neck, and Umar took hold of Hafsah's neck, both saying: 'You ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for what he does not have!' They both said: 'By Allah, we will never ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for what he does not have.'
