English Translation

Hujayn and Yunus narrated to us, they said: al-Layth ibn Sa'd narrated to us, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) — that Hatib ibn Abi Balta'ah wrote to the people of Makkah informing them that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was marching toward them. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was informed of this, so he sent Ali and al-Zubayr and said: 'You will find a woman at Rawdat Khakh who has a letter — take it from her.' They found her and said: 'Bring out the letter.' She said: 'I have no letter.' They said: 'Bring out the letter, or we will strip you.' So she brought it out from her braid. the Prophet ﷺ summoned Hatib and said: 'What is this, O Hatib?' He said: 'Do not be hasty with me, O Messenger of Allah. I was a man attached to Quraysh but not of them, and the Muhajirun with you have kinship ties by which they protect their families. I wanted, since I lacked that connection, to take a means among them by which I could protect my family.' Umar said: 'Let me strike his neck.' the Prophet ﷺ said: 'He was present at Badr, and what do you know — perhaps Allah looked upon the people of Badr and said: Do what you wish, for I have forgiven you.'
