Hadith #191

English Translation

Yaḥyā ibn Ādam narrated to us: Maʿrūf — meaning Ibn Wāṣil — narrated to us, he said: Ḥafṣah bint Ṭalq — a woman from the tribe, in the year ninety — narrated to me, from Abū ʿUmayrah, who said: We were sitting with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ one day when a man came with a plate of dates on it. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'What is this? Is it charity or a gift?' He said: 'Charity.' He said: 'Then give it to the people.' And Ḥasan — may Allāh's blessings and peace be upon him — was crawling in front of him. The boy took a date and put it in his mouth. the Prophet ﷺ put his finger into the boy's mouth, removed the date, and threw it away, then said: 'We, the family of Muḥammad — charity is not lawful for us.' I said to Maʿrūf: 'Is Abū ʿUmayrah your grandfather?' He said: 'My father's grandfather.' Ḥasan ibn Mūsā narrated to us: Maʿrūf narrated to us, from Ḥafṣah bint Ṭalq, from Abū ʿUmayrah Usayd ibn Mālik — the grandfather of Maʿrūf — he said: We were sitting with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ — and he mentioned the same.
