English Translation

Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us: Ḥammād ibn Salamah informed us, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd, from Abū Burdah, who said: I passed by al-Rabdhah and there was a tent. I said: 'Whose is this?' It was said: 'Muḥammad ibn Maslamah's.' So I asked permission and entered upon him. I said: 'May Allāh have mercy on you, you hold a position of importance in this matter. If only you would go out to the people and command and forbid!' He said: 'The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "There will be tribulation, division, and disagreement. When that happens, take your sword to Mount Uḥud, strike it against its side, break your arrows, cut your bowstring, and sit in your house."' What the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said has indeed come to pass, and I did what he commanded me.' Yazīd once said: 'Strike with it until you break it, then sit in your house until a sinful hand reaches you or Allāh عز وجل grants you relief.' He then brought down a sword that was hanging from the tent pole and drew it — it was a sword of wood. He said: 'I did what the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ commanded me and made this to frighten people.' Muʾammal narrated to us: Ḥammād narrated to us, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd, from Abū Burdah, who said: We passed by al-Rabdhah and there was a tent pitched — and he mentioned it. He said: 'There will be tribulation and division — strike your sword against the side of Uḥud.' ʿAffān narrated to us: Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us: ʿAlī ibn Zayd informed us, from Abū Burdah ibn Abī Mūsā, who said: We passed by al-Rabdhah and there was a tent. I said: 'Whose is this?' — and he mentioned the hadith.
