English Translation

Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us: Sharīk ibn ʿAbdullāh narrated to us, from ʿUthmān ibn ʿUmayr, from Zādhān Abū ʿUmar, from ʿUlaym, who said: We were sitting on a rooftop, and with us was a man from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ. Yazīd said: I believe it was ʿAbs al-Ghifārī. The people were discussing the plague. ʿAbs said: 'O plague, take me!' — saying it three times. ʿUlaym said to him: 'Why do you say this? Did not the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ say: "None of you should wish for death, for he is at the end of his deeds — he will not be sent back to make amends"?' He said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ say: "Hasten to death before six things: the rule of the foolish, the proliferation of police, the selling of judgements, the cheapening of blood, the severing of kinship, and a generation who take the Quran as musical instruments — they put forward one who sings it best for them, even if he is the least knowledgeable among them."'
