Hadith #226

English Translation

Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us: Hammām ibn Yaḥyā informed us, from al-Qāsim ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid al-Makkī, from ʿAbdullāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAqīl, that he heard Jābir ibn ʿAbdullāh say: A hadith reached me from a man who heard it from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, so I bought a camel, loaded my saddle upon it, and traveled for a month until I reached him in al-Shām. It was ʿAbdullāh ibn Unays. I said to the doorkeeper: 'Tell him Jābir is at the door.' He said: 'Ibn ʿAbdullāh?' I said: 'Yes.' So he came out, stepping on his garment, and we embraced each other. I said: 'A hadith has reached me from you that you heard from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ regarding retribution, and I feared that you or I would die before I could hear it.' He said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ say: 'People will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection' — or he said: 'the servants' — 'naked, uncircumcised, and buhmā.' We said: 'What is buhmā?' He said: 'Having nothing with them. Then a voice will call out to them that those near and far can hear: "I am the King, I am the Judge. It is not fitting that anyone of the people of the Fire should enter the Fire while someone of the people of Paradise owes him a right, until I exact it from him. And it is not fitting that anyone of the people of Paradise should enter Paradise while someone of the people of the Fire has a right against him, until I exact it from him — even a slap."' We said: 'How, when we come to Allāh عز وجل naked, uncircumcised, and with nothing?' He said: 'Through good deeds and bad deeds.'
