English Translation

Yaʿqūb narrated to us: my father narrated to me, from Ibn Isḥāq: Muʿādh ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn Khubayb al-Juhanī narrated to me, from his brother ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn Khubayb, who said: There was a man in the time of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb who asked him and ʿUmar gave him. He said: ʿAbdullāh ibn Unays — a Companion of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ — sat with us in the gathering of Juhaynah, in Ramadan. We said to him: 'O Abū Yaḥyā, did you hear anything from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ about this blessed night?' He said: 'Yes. We sat with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ at the end of this month and said: O Messenger of Allāh, when should we seek this blessed night? He said: "Seek it this night" — and that was the evening of the twenty-third night.' A man from the people said: 'Then, O Messenger of Allāh, it is the first of the last eight?' The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'It is not the first of eight, but the first of the last seven, for the month will not be complete.'
